Buy Somerset Project launches

It follows on from the success of last years pilot where Visit Somerset & Miles Tea & Coffee piloted the project in Tesco stores to great customer appeal.

The Buy Somerset campaign is part of a longer-term strategy to encourage customers across the county to spend more on local brands. It is seen as an essential precursor to bolstering the county’s status as major food destination in the South West, leveraging its rich heritage to grow a local leisure and tourism industry that’s already worth around £1.3bn.

Commenting on the scheme, John Turner, CEO of Visit Somerset, said: "This is a very exciting time for Somerset, and for us. Visit Somerset, is now the county’s number one inward investment brand. We’re proud to have an identity, which is increasingly converging around the marketing of strong credentials in tourism, food and drink, and only see opportunities for the future as the Visit Somerset brand grows".

“By encouraging locals and tourists to buy just 5 per cent more of our local products we’d inject an additional £25m into the regional economy, offering the prospect of more jobs and a Somerset brand which celebrates affordable and locally sourced food. This all is helping as we look to support local provenance and regional suppliers”

Speaking for Miles Tea & Coffee, Jo Hobbs said: “We’re delighted to be working with Visit Somerset and Tesco to promote the truly impressive range of suppliers that are right on people’s doorsteps. To be able to not only pilot the project last year, but to now see the project enter phase two with great customer feedback so far is really rewarding. Clearly Somerset people want to back Somerset's food & drink producers."

A New ‘Buy Somerset’ campaign to put county’s produce on the map takes a second step in its development from successful pilot.

It’s about to get much easier for customers to ‘Buy Somerset’, thanks to an exciting new campaign being launched this week.

The ‘Buy Somerset’ campaign, being led by Visit Somerset, is offering local customers substantial discounts on a range of local products, from Bath Ales to Brothers Cider, Miles Tea & Coffee to Cave Aged Cheddar, in a bid to support a regional food and drink industry that is already worth over £500m.

As part of the campaign a Buy Somerset food and drink voucher booklet will be circulated to up to 10 million people across the UK, and it is hoped the drive will boost the county’s status as a destination for food tourism.

The scheme, led by Visit Somerset, the official destination management organisation for the county of Somerset, is being supported by supermarket Tesco and leading local supplier Miles Tea & Coffee. It will offer a series of in-store tastings and local supplier trips to Tesco, with the voucher booklet being circulated in print and through Visit Somerset’s website, online and through Visit Somerset social media channels.
